an afternoon's work at the jewelry bench

Nice work!

I had no idea how hard it is to photograph rings until a coworker asked me to shoot some of her rings to sell on ebay. I thought I could do it in like 20 min. Wrong! It took two different shoots and a lot of research to figure out what the hell I was ding wrong.

so share the secrets, please -- I know I have much to learn about lighting highly reflective surfaces -- this pic was just lit with fluorescent tubes from above -- think I need some softer lighting and from multiple sources
and thanks for the comment :-)

Don't use a direct light source. Bracket your exposures. My best results came from shooting the pics indoors, with the curtains drawn. I laid the rings on some pastel papers and also wrapped a different colored pastel paper around some chopsticks as a substitute for fingers. Even then, they weren't super great, but the were usable. It think the pastel paper as a background helped a lot.

thanks, yeah I've used diffuse window light but somehow wind up needing a shot when it's dark out :-) -- yes! planning ahead is not one of my strong suits
